Facebook photo sizes worth using

Facebook shows photos in a few fixed frames (feed, cover, Story, profile). Export to one of those sizes first and the site has less reason to clip the sides or crush the file on upload.

What Facebook does to a photo you have not resized

Each placement has a fixed frame. A tall camera photo dropped into a 1200 × 630 link post loses the top and bottom. A wide landscape dropped onto an 820 × 312 cover loses the sides. Large originals also get a second compression pass, which is usually where the file goes soft.

Cropping here first means you pick what stays in the frame, and you send Facebook a file that already matches the slot.

A quick way to pick a format

Use 1200 × 630 for a link or landscape feed post. Square 1080 × 1080 and portrait 1080 × 1350 take more height on a phone. Stories and Reels need 1080 × 1920, with a quiet band at the top and bottom for Facebook’s own buttons.

Page covers display at 820 × 312 on desktop and lose the left and right on a phone, so keep logos and type near the centre. Event covers are 1920 × 1005. Group covers are 1640 × 856. Profile pictures are 720 × 720 and show as a circle in comments, so centre the face.

How to keep the download looking sharp

Work from the largest original you have. Match the pixel size of the slot so Facebook does not have to enlarge or squash it again. JPG is the better default for photographs. PNG is the better default for type, logos, and screenshots.

On a cover, event, or group image, leave space at the edges. Mobile views trim those sides, and the page name sits over the bottom of a page cover.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I resize an image for Facebook without an app?

Yes. Add a photo here, pick a size, set the crop, and download. The export matches the pixel size Facebook shows, so you can post it from your phone or desktop next.

What size should a Facebook post image be?

Link and landscape feed posts display at 1200 × 630 (1.91:1). Square 1080 × 1080 and portrait 1080 × 1350 also work in the feed and take more vertical space on a phone.

What size is a Facebook cover photo?

Page covers display at 820 × 312 on desktop. Phones crop the left and right, so keep faces, logos, and text near the middle of the frame.

What size should a Facebook profile picture be?

Export a 720 × 720 square. Facebook shows it as a circle in the feed and comments, so a face or logo in the centre will survive the crop.

What size is a Facebook event cover?

Event covers are 1920 × 1005 (1.91:1). Facebook shows them at different widths, so keep the title and date in the middle rather than on an edge.

What size is a Facebook group cover?

Group covers are 1640 × 856. Like page covers, the sides get trimmed on phones, so anything members need to read belongs in the centre.

Will this tool make my photo look worse?

A downsize from a clean original should look fine. What usually looks worse is posting a huge file and letting Facebook compress it. If your crop is smaller than the target, we flag that you are about to upscale.

When should I export PNG instead of JPG?

JPG for photos (smaller, faster to upload). PNG when the image has type, flat colour, or a hard edge that JPG will smear.

Do I have to create an account?

No. There is no sign-up, no watermark, and no cap on downloads.

Does the photo get sent to a server?

No. Cropping and export happen in this browser tab. Close the page and the file is gone from here.
