Instagram photo sizes worth using

Instagram still displays photos at a handful of fixed sizes. If you export to one of these before you publish, the app has less reason to trim the edges or squash the file.

What Instagram does to a photo you have not resized

The app maps every upload onto a small set of display frames. A 3:2 camera photo in a 4:5 slot loses the top and bottom. A 4000-pixel export gets squeezed down, and that second pass is usually where the file goes soft.

Doing the crop yourself means you choose what stays in the frame, and you send Instagram a file that already matches the slot.

A quick way to pick a format

Use 1080 × 1350 (4:5) when you want a feed post to take more screen as people scroll. Use 1080 × 1440 (3:4) if you care about how the post sits in the rectangular profile grid (vertical portrait). Square 1080 × 1080 is the least fussy option when the same image has to work in more than one place.

Wide 1080 × 566 shots suit landscapes and sit shorter in the feed. Stories and Reels need 1080 × 1920. Profile photos are stored at 320 × 320 and shown as a circle, so keep the subject in the middle.

How to keep the download looking sharp

Work from the largest original you have. For feed and Story sizes, a 1080-pixel width is the sweet spot (Instagram will not need to enlarge it). JPG is the better default for photographs. PNG is the better default for type, logos, and screenshots.

On a Story or Reel, leave a quiet band at the top and bottom. The username, buttons, and reply field sit there and will cover anything you place on the edge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I resize an image for Instagram without an app?

Yes. Add a photo here, pick a size, set the crop, and download. The export matches the pixel size Instagram shows, so you can post it from your phone or desktop next.

What are the current Instagram post dimensions?

The feed sizes people use most are 1080 × 1350 for a portrait, 1080 × 1440 for a vertical portrait, 1080 × 1080 for a square, and 1080 × 566 for a wide post. 4:5 is the one that usually fills more of the screen.

What size should I use for a Story or Reel cover?

Both use a 9:16 frame at 1080 × 1920. Keep names, faces, and any text out of the top and bottom strips, where Instagram draws its own interface.

How big should an Instagram profile photo be?

Export a 320 × 320 square. Instagram shows it as a circle, so a face or logo in the centre will survive the crop.

Will this tool make my photo look worse?

A downsize from a clean original should look fine. What usually looks worse is posting a huge file and letting Instagram compress it. If your crop is smaller than the target, we flag that you are about to upscale.

When should I export PNG instead of JPG?

JPG for photos (smaller, faster to upload). PNG when the image has type, flat colour, or a hard edge that JPG will smear.

Do I have to create an account?

No. There is no sign-up, no watermark, and no cap on downloads.

Does the photo get sent to a server?

No. Cropping and export happen in this browser tab. Close the page and the file is gone from here.
