X photo sizes worth using
X still prefers a few fixed frames for in-stream photos, headers, and articles. Export to one of those sizes first and the timeline has less reason to letterbox the shot or clip the header.
| Format | Size in pixels | Aspect ratio |
|---|---|---|
| Landscape post | 1280 × 720 | 16:9 |
| Vertical post | 720 × 1280 | 9:16 |
| Square post | 1080 × 1080 | 1:1 |
| Profile picture | 400 × 400 | 1:1 |
| Header photo | 1500 × 500 | 3:1 |
| Article cover | 1500 × 600 | 5:2 |
What X does to a photo you have not resized
In-stream photos display cleanest at 16:9 or 1:1. A tall camera shot in a landscape slot gets a thin centre crop. A square dropped onto a 1500 × 500 header keeps only a strip through the middle, and another 60 pixels can disappear from the top and bottom depending on the browser.
Cropping here first means you choose what stays in the frame, and you send X a file that already matches the slot.
A quick way to pick a format
Use 1280 × 720 for a landscape timeline photo and 1080 × 1080 when you want a square. Vertical 720 × 1280 suits a single tall shot (X also uses 9:16 for the video tab). Profile photos are 400 × 400 and show as a circle, so keep the face in the centre.
Headers are 1500 × 500. Keep type and logos away from the top and bottom, because those edges get trimmed. Article covers use a 5:2 frame at 1500 × 600, a little taller than the header so the story image has more room.
How to keep the download looking sharp
Work from the largest original you have. For a header or article cover, start with a wide file so the 1500-pixel export does not look soft. JPG is the better default for photographs. PNG is the better default for type, logos, and screenshots.
X accepts JPG, PNG, and GIF. Photos stay under 5 MB on mobile and 15 MB on the web. If your crop is smaller than the target, we flag that you are about to upscale.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I resize an image for X without an app?
Yes. Add a photo here, pick a size, set the crop, and download. The export matches the pixel size X shows, so you can post it from your phone or desktop next.
What size should an X post image be?
Landscape posts are 1280 × 720 (16:9). Square posts are 1080 × 1080. Vertical posts are 720 × 1280 (9:16). 16:9 and 1:1 are the safest pair if the same photo has to work in more than one place.
What size is an X header photo?
The recommended header is 1500 × 500. Displays still crop about 60 pixels from the top and bottom, so keep faces, logos, and text in the middle band.
What size should an X profile picture be?
Export a 400 × 400 square. X shows it as a circle, so a face or logo in the centre will survive the crop. Keep the file under 2 MB.
What size is an X article cover?
Article covers use a 5:2 frame. We export 1500 × 600 so the width matches the header and the extra height gives the story image more room than a 3:1 banner.
Will this tool make my photo look worse?
A downsize from a clean original should look fine. What usually looks worse is posting a huge file or a mismatched ratio and letting X crop it. If your crop is smaller than the target, we flag that you are about to upscale.
When should I export PNG instead of JPG?
JPG for photos (smaller, faster to upload). PNG when the image has type, flat colour, or a hard edge that JPG will smear.
Do I have to create an account?
No. There is no sign-up, no watermark, and no cap on downloads.
Does the photo get sent to a server?
No. Cropping and export happen in this browser tab. Close the page and the file is gone from here.
